Know Your Why: The Secret to a Successful Job Search

We are probably all guilty at some stage of our career to scroll through jobs and apply for anything that sounds half interesting, hoping that one will land. Sadly, this scattered job search approach rarely results in a successful career move.
Also, the most successful job seekers aren't necessarily those with the most impressive CVs. They are typically, the ones who know exactly what they want and, more importantly, why they want it.
What vs Why - Both Matter
Knowing what you want seems straightforward. Maybe it's a role in marketing, a remote position, or a salary above a certain level. But without understanding your why, you're navigating without a compass.
Your "why" is the deeper meaning behind your ‘what’. Perhaps you are seeking a role within a smaller company because you are looking for increased responsibility or a wider variety of tasks. Or a role with a charity because your sense of purpose is driving you to make a difference for a worthy cause.
The Benefits of Gaining Clarity
You will spot the right opportunities faster. Knowing your priorities means you are less likely to waste time pursuing openings with a poor fit and instead focus on your target roles.
You will interview with more confidence. When asked the question why you want the role, you will be able to respond articulately and authentically and stand out from candidates that just want any job.
You'll avoid the risk of job hopping. When you know what you want and why you want it, you will reduce the risk of finding yourself in a role that will eventually wear you down.
How Can I Know?
First thing to do is pause and ask yourself these simple questions:
What motivates me? When have I felt most fulfilled at work?
What would I like to be different from my current situation?
What are my current career drivers? Security, promotion, work life balance?
Where would I like to be in 1, 3 or 5 years’ time?
These will no doubt change over time however what’s important is where you are now and moving forward with greater clarity based on that.
“Clarity Precedes Success”
The above quote from Robin Sharma says it all. So perhaps now is the time to give up chasing roles that don't fit and instead taking the time to get clear on what you do want and why you want it. Armed with this knowledge you can pursue your next role with a renewed vigour and passion.
